Tracy Morgan has returned to the stage after he had upset fans with his homophobic remarks during a set in Tennessee.

The 30 Rock star sparked outrage by making a series of controversial remarks about homosexuality during a stand-up gig in Nashville, Tennessee on 3 June.

He later apologised for his comments, insisting that he "went too far and was not funny", and vowed to take part in more gay rights activism, even agreeing to meet with gay and transgender youths in Nasville to say sorry directly.

Morgan was back on stage for the first time since the controversy with a show at Manhattan's the Carolines on Broadway comedy club on Saturday and he addressed the issue during his set, according to the New York Times.

He told the crowd: "You're all sitting here waiting for me (to) say something about the controversy right? I'm 42, man, and now all of a sudden I'm homophobic?... I don't have that in me. I believe gay, straight, anybody, everybody's supposed to be happy in this world, man."

He also joked: "My father was the lead singer in the Village People. I would sing the Y.M.C.A. the loudest. I was sitting right there when he wrote the song, my daddy. The Indian was my Godfather."
