The Law & Order franchise, known for it's ripped-from-the-headlines approach to stories, is shooting an episode based on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' shooting.
Law & Order: LA, while based on the shooting near Tucson,in which six people were killed and 13 others were injured, including the Arizona Democrat, is not an exact copy of the real-life tragedy, according to Entertainment Weekly.
According to EW, a state senator is among those shot. But the description EW offers ? "a female state senator is gunned down in a public setting" ? makes it clear what inspired the episode.
Is it too close to home, literally and figuratively? Too soon after the real event?
It's always a tricky balance. The show takes this approach to try to stay timely and relevant but also has to make the story generic enough that it stands up as a rerun. As anyone who has a television set knows, one of the many versions of Law & Order is rerun almost all the time.
Word is that it is planned as the season finale. NBC is stressing that it is a work of fiction, not fact.
